High Marks for Staff, Value
Chartered a Lagoon 440 that was fairly new, the boat was in very good condition. The checkout was very organized and easy, the staff was more than helpful in the usual drills and replaced a couple of missing items right away.

The only issue with the boat we had were a couple of dead lights, but the major systems all were trouble-free.

Would certainly come back.

Disagree with last post
I have done a bunch of chartering in the BVI and have been very happy with CatCo, both in terms of boats and service. The people there are attentive and helpful, I think you just have to understand that charter companies are not hotel operators and not expect to be pampered all the time. The most important things is that the boats are well taken care of and that the check-out, charter briefings, etc. are informative and efficient. What really matters is to get out on the water and that once you are there, everything works.

At Catamaran Co, the facilities are good, the boats are well maintained and the people know how to run a charter outfit. I have chartered there a couple of times and whenever I have had problems they have been prompt in resolving them.

Would recomend the Privelege designs over the Lagoons, but that is personal preference and both are nice.

I have also used Voyage and like them as well.

Good boat, service OK
Chartered a Lagoon with them, which was quite nice and in good condition. No problems with the boat at all.

The service, however was not as good as I would have liked. The staff seemed more interested in getting the charter briefing done than with explaining all the ins and outs of operating the boat. I had that experience more broadly on Tortola but would have hoped for a bit more friendliness on the part of the operator.

Most importantly, they told us what was needed and the boat was splendid. I would use them again.

Equipage Substandard but Catco Stepped Up
This is a detailed and critical review for those who want lots of data, like me. Overall I give Catco high marks (9+) for working to make things right for nitpicky people like us. Chartered a nearly new Lagoon 500. General aesthetics and comfort level were nice, really nice; furnishings & outfitting not so much.

Jib furler design was fundamentally flawed and substandard. Ditto for main traveler and mainsheet winch controls placement. Electric winches were quite handy, though. Spreaders had no boots & damaged jib. Why we had to even argue with Catco about this, I don’t know. In fairness they did not charge us for the repair. Main reefing blocks were completely failed and worthless. Anchor bridle was poorly arranged and shackle was galled. Catco was fair and did not make excuses.

No VHF up at the helm (at nav-sta only). To their credit the company provided handheld free of charge. The galley was very poorly equipped unless all you wanted to do was blend pina coladas. Fry pans, cookie sheets, baking pans, utensils, mixing bowls, sponges, dish clothes? Pathetic if at all. Tiny grill. One cooler. Pretty weak for a boat that sleeps 12! Company seemed surprised by our request for a fry pan and gave us a little 8” thing that would scramble eggs for two. They did cough up an extra grill & cooler, too.

Nav charts? One chart provided. They said we wouldn’t need more detailed charts but we had to rely on our own charter guidebook for details on some approaches. For this class of boat they should have had a full set. Bed linens were substandard but passable. Sound system was okay but sound quality with Ipod via accessory cable was poor.

Catco provided no fishing poles, masks or snorkels, etc.; only fins. They suggested places to rent or buy them. Everything I’ve read says don’t bother bringing this stuff because the companies provide it. Not so. In fairness, Catco didn’t promise these things and therefore was not reneging.

The checkout was good but for a few things. He said we’d have plenty of propane. Wrong. We ran out during our trip. He did come out to boat with 2nd propane bottle at no charge. Sounder was supposedly calibrated to read zero when keels touch but you’d run aground at about 5.5 ft indicated depth (I checked!).
