Great place
Placencia is the base to charter from in Belize. We chartered there a couple of years back after trying BVI's several times, St. Martin and St. Lucia. Different from these places in that there is not much development outside of Placentia, so we ate on board most nights. That being said, Placentia is very neat little town with decent food and a fair bit of culture. A fair number of tourists, more than other parts of South Belize, but did not give me and my wife the feeling of being touristed out.
Sailing is good, the winds were trade-like for much of our week long charter. We had to watch the weather though, as protection was minimal in most places. The highlight were the reefs, which had terrific diving. We saw many fish, heathy corals and the currents were not bad, which is good for those of us who are not in as great of shape as we could be.
The only downside is that there are not a lot of services or places to eat, so we cooked onboard every night. BYOB!
We had no problems with our boat and the people running the show were great. Heard from our friends that Moorings was OK too, but can't speak first-hand.
